Pet Peeve

I have a really silly pet peeve. Silly because there is absolutely nothing I can do to remedy the situation. And silly because it makes no difference if the situation is remedied. I’ve noticed, that when watching cooking shows, I can hardly tolerate it when a bowl is scraped inadequately, leaving tons of batter behind. I’m sure they do this because of the angle of the shot so that the viewer can see inside the bowl, but it drives me bonkers.

  1. OK I am not into cooking shows, maybe because there is no TV out here, but I will share one that drives me nuts every day…the radio. I swear to myself on a daily basis that I am going to get a stop watch and time the local talk shows, because they talk for maybe 7-8 minutes then 5 minutes of commercials. Out of a “one hour” show I bet there is less than 40 minutes of actual conversation %$%#@

    1. Yeah, I would not be a very good radio host. I know I would totally forget to break for the commercials, lol.

  2. Amen to the waste. And sometimes have seen them double dipping with the same spoon to sample what they are cooking!!

  3. I agree with you. I have a lot of other beefs with cooking shows. Call me old fashioned, but what ever happened to listing the ingredients? Many of the shows run through the ingredients and steps so fast that only a stenographer could record their actions. I guess I could run back the show with the DVR, but even that’s too complicated for me. So, they tell us to go to their website for the recipe. I’ve tried that too. I usually can find the right recipe, but it may take me all afternoon. The websites have so much information that finding the right show and telecast can be complicated. And, if the show was a rerun episode it is going to be even more difficult to find the recipe.

My solution is to have the ingredients listed in a hidden box (bubble) at the bottom of the screen. It would be sort of like the foreign language option that the newer TVs have. Maybe someday we would be able to print the recipes directly from the television while the show was running. Hey, I guess I should send that idea into someone who might be interested….LOL!

My other beef is cooking hosts who wear jewelry on their fingers or wrists while cooking. Paula Deen is one of them. I love her food, but please…..! I’ve seen her mix meatloaf with her rings on. The rule for cooking is to at least remove all rings. Microscopic food particles can get lodged under the bands and in the settings. Then the next time they’re cooking the bacteria can get into the food. That’s nasty! Anyone who has worked in the kitchen for a major fast food restaurant would know this rule. Most good supervisors would be over your back yelling at you.

Don’t misunderstand me. I love my cooking shows. But, like you I can always find some fault that I cannot overlook.

    1. I’ve had the same problem trying to find recipes on their websites! I love cooking shows and I love cookbooks. A malady (the cookbooks) shared by one of my younger sisters. Good to hear from you, Lyle.
