Museum/Marine Advisory Lecture Series, LSA…Out and about.

It has been way too nice outside the past couple of days.  Sitting at the computer seems almost sacreligious!

Last evening the spouse and I attended one of the first talks of spring, hosted by the Museum of the Aleutians and the UAF Marine Advisory Program.  Museum lecture aReid Brewer, recently returned from Fairbanks, was welcomed by Zoya Johnson,  the Executive Director of the Museum.  Museum2Reid has been out of town since winter working on his Phd, and since we all missed him so much – here he is again.  (Sarah – he has kind of a sunburn that he got up on the hill yesterday!)  Museum 3Reid introduced Carin Ashjian, Woods Hole Oceanography Institute, who gave a presentation on the research being conducted in the eastern Bering Sea ecosystem from 2007-2012.  The study is being funded by the North Pacific Research Board and the National Science Foundation.  It was a full  house and an interesting update on the work the team is doing.  They are being hosted by the USCG icebreaker Healy.

Then we went to check out the progress – finally – being made on the small boat harbor project at Little South America.  LSA 1

Ballyhoo was our next stop.  Ballyhoo 2

Just wandering around to see what we could see.

In my absence….

I recently came across these photos on the camera.  I did not take them.  I now have a little insight into what goes on around the place when I am not home.  Obviously, planks are brought INTO the house, laid across dining room chairs, and WALKED!  Mop handles are used for balance and swords, and patches are designed to throw off depth perception!!  AAARRGGGH!Misc 006

King of the mountain.

Alena! had to work a couple of hours today, so SP was ensconced in his chair having a second breakfast.  Aunty Laresa came by and we decided to take a quick outing to see what we could see.

Looking home.
Looking home.

SP soon found a big metal chain that he proceeded to drag around the hills until he got too tired to drag it anymore.  I am sure his mom will be forever grateful that we didn’t let him bring it home.2

We wandered around and, of course, he was soon so hot and sweating.  It is very hard to keep a coat on this boy.  At least he was willing to tie it around his waist, so that we didn’t have to haul it around.

Too hot for a coat.
Too hot for a coat.

Running in the hills and exploring – what could be better?  I’m sure it would be better if Grandma wasn’t there telling him to “get away from the edge…don’t poke your eye out on the bushes…stop running so fast,  you’re going to trip in those boots!”

Woo hoo!
Woo hoo!

We had to distract SP by taking pictures of the pole when he realized it was a climbing pole!

Thank goodness SP isn't tall enough to make the first step!

We were investigating various things, including the status of cranberry plants.

Last year's berries with spring buds.

The fireweed are sprouting.  Shoots like these are yummy this time of year.  Use them in salads, stir fry, spring rolls and whatever else you can think of to do with veggies.

Climbing on concrete seems to be a lot of fun.  9

And all that running around – like a dog, he probably puts in 75% more mileage than we do – a rest is always in order.

All done in.
All done in.

Time to go home.
